SINCE the first ground was broken on the 1101* project outside Piteå, visitors from every corner of the globe have come to witness the emergence of Europe’s largest single energy transition project.

The site combines nature with impressive, large-scale infrastructure that literally reaches great technical heights, making 1101* a unique attraction. Of course this is helped by the fact that the whole development makes an important contribution to the nation’s energy supply, now and for the future.

Talk about the project often mentions the 1101 wind turbines but, barely halfway through the project, the number of stories and anecdotes from Markbygden already far outnumbers the officially approved turbines. Here we have put together a small sample of 1101 stories.

SWEDEN’S CROWN PRINCESS visited Piteå and the wind farm in Markbygden to learn more about renewable energy. During the visit to the Skogberget project, the Crown Princess was guided by representatives from Svevind and the investor Enercon. Also present were Norrbotten County Governor Sven-Erik Österberg and Piteå City Councillor Peter Roslund.

After the Crown Princess had been hoisted up by crane to the top of a long-established wind turbine about 85 metres above ground, Her Royal Highness was accompanied to lunch in a Sami tent at site21 on the wind farm.
The Crown Princess also found out more about solar energy in northern Sweden through PiteEnergi’s research, which showed that it is possible to produce solar energy in Norrbotten just like down in southern Europe.

On 9 October 2019, Markbygden 1101* received a visit from H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf. The theme for the visit was “New high-tech initiatives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions”. The programme started with a visit to the Sunpine biodiesel factory in Piteå and then continued with a coach trip up to the MBETT project area. During the coach trip, Svevind AB and Markbygden 1101* were presented by Mikael Kyrk, Operations Manager at Svevind AB, and Wolfgang Kropp, CEO of Svevind AB.

H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf was given a presentation of a GE wind turbine. By the stairs of wind turbine Gråberget 14, a gift from MBETT was handed over in a cheerful ceremony. After refreshments, the journey continued towards Luleå with lunch for the guests at the County Governor’s residence. The lunch was attended by representatives from Svevind, project owners and regional representatives.

IN ADDITION TO ROYALTY and foreign dignitaries, media coverage of the project has been constant and extensive since the beginning. Everyone from the local press to many of the world’s biggest media and news outlets have made repeated visits and reported on 1101*.

CNN, Bloomberg News, Monocle and NY Times are just some of the international media to have made the trip here. CNN brought a large team to Piteå, spending three days making features about 1101* with a focus on the completed sections of phase 1 and the interests of the Sami population in the area.

Bloomberg focused on the overall scale and how frictionless the project has been, despite us being in the middle of a pandemic. Since then, they have presented a number of features on our project and continue to follow our progress.

On a national level, we like to say that everyone has been here. The daily press, TV, radio and the industry media have all shown considerable interest. We intend to maintain good communications with the media and everyone else who wants to learn more about Markbygden 1101*.
